What is Circular RNA?

February 19, 2025

Circular RNA (circRNA) is a unique class of non-coding RNA molecules characterized by their closed-loop structure, widely present in eukaryotic transcriptomes. Most circRNAs are composed of exon sequences and exhibit conservation across different species, as well as tissue-specific and developmental stage-specific Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Due to their resistance to nucleases, circRNAs are more structurally stable than linear RNAs. With advancements in bioinformatics and high-throughput sequencing technologies, a large number of circRNAs have been discovered and identified, leading to an increased understanding of their functions. On one hand, circRNAs can bind to corresponding microRNAs, acting like "sponges" to adsorb miRNAs, preventing them from binding to target genes and thereby co-regulating the expression of target genes. On the other hand, circRNAs can directly regulate other RNA levels through base pairing or interact with RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) to influence gene expression. In summary, circRNAs may serve as objective clinical diagnostic markers and valuable targets for disease treatment.

Nanjing Healed Gene Biotechnology Co., Ltd. utilizes fluorescence PCR technology to detect the levels of four circular RNA (circRNA) biomarkers in human plasma samples in vitro. The detection results, combined with clinical standard diagnostic methods, can be used for the clinical auxiliary diagnosis of MDD.
